Keep a clear firing record

Label each test with a durable identifier according to your studio’s practice. Record the clay body, dimensions, surface treatment and firing information supplied by the kiln operator. Photograph the piece before and after firing.

Let trained staff handle kiln operation and follow all studio safety procedures. Do not assume a decorative piece is suitable for food use; materials and firing need appropriate verification. Compare several small tests before committing a large piece to an unfamiliar process.
